Home Blood Pressure Monitoring: A Four-Step Coach for a Good Reading

Quick answer

For a good home reading, sit quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported and feet flat, rest your arm with the cuff at heart level and do not talk. Take two readings a minute apart. Use an automatic, validated upper-arm cuff. The coach animation below is an illustration, not a measurement and not a result of any product.

What are the four steps?

Sit, support, place, stay quiet. The coach on the home page shows them in motion, and the list below repeats them.

  1. 01

Check the seal and your list

On a new bottle, check that the safety seal is intact. Read the Supplement Facts. Note any blood-pressure medicine you take.

  2. 02

Pour an 8 oz glass of water

The label says to take one capsule with an 8 oz glass of water. The sales site suggests the morning.

  3. 03

    Take one capsule

One capsule a day is the label's starting line. The label also says you may take up to two a day; ask your doctor before going above one.

  4. 04

    Keep your blood-pressure checks

A bottle lasts 60 days at one capsule a day. Keep your cuff or clinic readings going, and share what you take with your doctor.

The steps follow the AHA page on home monitoring 1. The gauge in the coach settles at the end to show a calm reading. It is an illustration only: it does not measure your pressure and it does not show the result of any product.

Which cuff should you use?

An automatic, validated, upper-arm cuff that fits your arm. Wrist and finger monitors are less reliable 1.

  • Look for a validated device on a trusted list.
  • Measure your upper arm and pick the right cuff size.
  • Bring the cuff to a clinic once to compare readings.
  • Replace worn tubes or cuffs.

When and how often?

Take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, for about a week, or as your clinician advises.

Avoid smoking, caffeine and exercise for 30 minutes before 1. Sit in the same chair at the same time. Use the same arm. Write the results down, with the date, time and pulse. Do not take a reading when in pain, upset or in a hurry. A single high reading is not a diagnosis, and a single good one does not mean all is well. The trend is what counts.

What belongs in the log?

Date, time, both readings, pulse, medicines taken, and any note such as poor sleep or a salty meal.

Example row126/80124/7968Rested 5 minutes, left arm

The row is an example of the layout, not a real reading. Bring the log to your clinician. If you start a supplement, note the start date, as the results timeline explains.

When should you not wait?

If a reading is over 180/120 and you have chest pain, trouble breathing, vision changes or weakness, call 911.

If a reading is over 180/120 with no symptoms, rest five minutes and measure again. If it is still that high, call your clinician at once 2. See the signs page.

What mistakes spoil a reading?

A full bladder, crossed legs, a talking session, a cuff over clothing, an arm hanging down and a cuff of the wrong size all push readings up.

Sit with legs uncrossed, rest your arm on a flat surface so the cuff is at heart level, and put the cuff on bare skin 1. Let the machine finish and do not move. Wait one minute before the second reading.

Why measure at home?

Home readings show your pressure in daily life, away from the clinic, and let you and your clinician see the pattern.

Some people have higher readings in a clinic, because of nerves, and some have normal clinic readings but high ones at home. A log of several days settles which is true. It also helps check whether a medicine is working, which is the right question to ask of any treatment, including a supplement you may be thinking about 1. The results timeline shows how to keep the log fair.

Home monitoring is not for everyone. If it makes you anxious, talk to your clinician about how often to check. Checking many times a day does not give better information, and it can raise stress and the numbers.

How do you prepare the room?

Choose a quiet chair and a table at the right height, turn off the TV and put the phone away.

Use the toilet first. Sit with your back against the chair and your feet flat on the floor. Rest your bare arm on the table so the middle of the cuff is level with your heart. Put the cuff just above the elbow, snug enough to slip a finger under it. Rest quietly for five minutes, breathing normally. Do not talk, and do not look at the screen as it inflates. Press start, and keep still until it finishes. Wait one minute and repeat. Write both numbers down straight away, before you look at anything else 1.

Take your medicines as prescribed, not skipped on the day of a check unless your clinician says so. Note the time you took them. And remember: the animated coach is an illustration, not a medical device.

How do you check your cuff?

Take the cuff to a clinic or pharmacy once and compare it with their device on the same arm, minutes apart.

Small differences are normal. Large ones, such as more than a few mm Hg every time, suggest a poor fit or a faulty device. Ask the nurse to check your technique at the same visit; many people make a small error, such as a dangling arm, without knowing it. Replace the cuff if the tubing cracks, the numbers jump around or the display fades. Keep the manual, and keep spare batteries, since low batteries can give odd readings 1.

If you buy a cuff online, check that the model is on a validation list, and be careful with unknown brands and with wrist devices, which are more sensitive to arm position.

How do you share the log with a clinician?

Bring the paper or phone log, the cuff and a list of everything you take, including supplements.

Tell the clinician the start date of anything new, such as a capsule, a diet or a medicine change. Ask what range is right for you and when to call. Ask whether home readings should change what you do. The aim is a shared plan, written down, that you can follow. A supplement is part of that plan only if your clinician agrees, and the label dose is a ceiling, not a target.
