How it works
How Does Melonex Work? The Capsule, the Blend and What the Research Shows
Melonex is a capsule with one 500 mg blend of L-citrulline malate and two forms of L-arginine. The body uses arginine to make nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes blood vessels, and citrulline can be turned into arginine. That is the idea behind it. No study has tested Melonex, so how well it works is unknown.

What does Melonex do in the body?
Melonex is built around one idea: the body can turn arginine into nitric oxide, and nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax. The label names the amino acids and leaves the rest to you.
Each capsule holds one Proprietary Blend of 500 mg. The three names inside are L-citrulline dl-malate, L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate and L-arginine HCl. Two of the three are arginine. The third, citrulline, is an amino acid the body can convert into arginine 1.
Arginine is a building block for the body's own nitric oxide, which is made by an enzyme called nitric oxide synthase 2. The lining of blood vessels, the endothelium, produces nitric oxide, and that is one way the vessels stay flexible 3.
The label front says "Heart Support*" and "Circulation Support*". The stars lead to the FDA statement: the claims are not evaluated, and the product is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.
That chain of steps is basic biology. It is not a trial of Melonex. No source we found shows that this capsule changes nitric oxide, blood flow or blood pressure in people.
What is inside one Melonex capsule?
One capsule holds a single 500 mg Proprietary Blend plus three other ingredients that make the capsule itself: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate.
The blend's three names are listed from most to least by weight, a rule for blends 4. So the first name is at least 167 mg and the other two are capped. The label prints no single amount, and neither does the sales site 5.
- 1L- Citrulline dl - Malate167 mg or more of the 500 mg blend
- 2L-Arginine (Alpha-Ketoglutarate dihydrate)under 250 mg of the 500 mg blend
- 3L - Arginine HCLunder 167 mg of the 500 mg blend
From the Supplement Facts panel, in label order. The label prints 500 mg for the whole Proprietary Blend and no amount for any name, so the limits shown come from the order alone. Other ingredients (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate) are not part of the blend.
The brand's own plate for the capsule says the shell materials are "not in the blend". You can see it on the capsule form page.
How could citrulline and arginine reach your blood vessels?
Citrulline and arginine take different routes. Arginine eaten alone is broken down in the gut and liver before much reaches the blood, while citrulline passes through and is turned into arginine later 6.
That is why some products pair them. In one study of 20 healthy volunteers, citrulline raised blood arginine more than arginine did. Still, no tested plan improved the widening of blood vessels beyond where people started 6.
Melonex pairs one citrulline salt with two arginine salts. Whether the 500 mg total is enough to change blood arginine at all is not printed, tested or known.
You swallow the capsule
The shell dissolves and the blend is released with the 8 oz of water the label calls for.
The salts split into amino acids
Malate, alpha-ketoglutarate and hydrochloride are the partners that hold each amino acid. The body separates them.
The body decides what to do
Some arginine is used up in the gut and liver. Citrulline can be turned into arginine in the kidneys, which cells then use to make nitric oxide 1.
What do studies of these ingredients show?
Studies of arginine and citrulline show small average changes in blood pressure at gram-a-day amounts. None of them tested Melonex.
| Ingredient | What the studies used | What they found |
|---|---|---|
| L-arginine | Grams a day, weeks to months | Small average drops in pooled trials, about 6 over 3 mm Hg 7. Mayo says it might help; MSK calls the evidence mixed and limited 8 2 |
| L-citrulline | 3 to 9 g a day, 1 to 17 weeks | A top-number drop of about 4 mm Hg in one analysis, no effect in another 9 10 |
| Arginine AKG | 12 g a day in sports trials | Better bench press in trained men; no rise in nitric oxide markers in a 7-day trial 11 12 |
Most of that research was in people with mildly high blood pressure or in athletes, not in a general crowd taking a 500 mg blend. See the claims versus evidence page.

See packsHow does the Melonex dose compare with those studies?
One Melonex capsule is a small fraction of any study dose. Even at the label's top dose of two capsules, the whole blend is 1 g a day for all three names together.
The bars below set the most one capsule can hold of a name against the amount used in a study. They are not a promise that more is better, and they say nothing about the safe upper limit.

What is not known about how Melonex works?
Most of the important questions about this capsule have no public answer. That is not a flaw in you or in the research; it is how supplements are sold.
- How much of each name is in a capsule. The label prints only the 500 mg total.
- Whether the capsule changes blood arginine, nitric oxide or blood flow in people.
- Whether it changes blood pressure, and for whom. No trial of Melonex exists.
- How it behaves with blood-pressure medicines. Mayo, MSK and Cleveland Clinic warn that arginine can add to them 8 2 13.
- How much of the effect, if any, would come from the capsule rather than from a morning routine that also includes water, a walk and a cuff check.
FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold, and it does not check that a claim is true 14.
Where does Melonex fit next to everyday habits?
It does not replace them. Sodium, weight, activity, sleep and medicine move blood pressure far more reliably than any supplement we found.
AHA says there are no special pills, vitamins or drinks that replace prescription medicines and lifestyle changes 15. NCCIH says no dietary supplement has been shown to work like blood-pressure drugs 16. If you take Melonex, treat it as one small line in a day that includes a home reading, a walk and a meal plan your doctor agrees with.
- About 7:00, with breakfast time
One capsule with an 8 oz glass of water, as the label says. Prescribed medicine keeps its own schedule; never cut back or quit on your own (AHA).
- Morning and evening: a reading
Home monitoring: an automatic, validated upper-arm cuff, five minutes of rest, two readings a minute apart at the same time each day, and a log (AHA).
- A walk after a meal
Adults are advised 2.5 hours of moderate activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (AHA Life's Essential 8).
- Dinner and night: sodium and sleep
The DASH plan sets 2,300 mg of sodium a day, or 1,500 mg if desired (NHLBI), and AHA says most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
Points from AHA 17, 15, 18 and 19. The time for the capsule is a suggestion; follow your label.
FAQ01
Melonex questions people ask
How does Melonex work?
Melonex is a capsule with one 500 mg blend of L-citrulline malate and two forms of L-arginine. The idea is that these amino acids feed the body's own nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. No study has tested the capsule, so its real effect is unknown.
Is Melonex a nitric oxide booster?
The sales site uses the line 'Assist in Maintaining Healthy Nitric Oxide Levels'. In a 7-day trial, 12 g a day of an arginine AKG product did not raise nitric oxide markers beyond placebo. Nothing shows that 500 mg of this blend does.
How is citrulline different from arginine?
Citrulline is an amino acid the body can turn into arginine. Arginine taken by mouth is partly broken down in the gut before it reaches the blood. A study of 20 healthy adults found citrulline raised blood arginine more than arginine itself.
Does Melonex work right away?
The sales site uses the phrase 'immediate relief of arterial pressure'. The trials we found followed blood pressure over weeks, and only a cuff or clinic reading shows pressure. Nothing here supports a fast effect.
Do I need all three ingredients?
The label combines all three in one blend, so you cannot take them apart. Whether the combination adds anything over one ingredient has not been tested for this capsule.
Will Melonex replace my blood-pressure medicine?
No. Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. AHA says never cut back or quit without your doctor, and that no pill or vitamin replaces prescription medicine.
